ASIST training opportunity June 13-14

Scott and Deena Siddle with Sierra Sun Intervention Care will host a two-day workshop for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) Wednesday and Thursday, June 13 and 14 at the First Baptist Church, 3701 Suhre Street in Lake Isabella. Training is $240 per participant. Sign-up forms available at Sonrise or online from the LivingWorks website. The library will be celebrating National Children’s Book Week May 6-12.  Join us on May 10 at the Kern River Valley Library in Lake Isabella for a special Toddler Time at 11:15 a.m. and then join us at 3:30 p.m. when local children’s author, Jim McMullan, will be reading his newest book Flocks, Herds, Litters & Schools. Mr.McMullan, a retired actor and current author, will help you to investigate the names given to animal groups in this fun interactive book.

‘Supermoon’ shines over valley

On May 5, the night sky was brighter due to the special full moon, known as the “supermoon.” It was 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full moons of 2012. The moon was about 221,802 miles from Earth - about 15,000 miles closer than usual.

CJSF invited to Central
Regional Conference

The California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) is a wonderful opportunity for the exceptional children of our valley. Recently CSF members from Wallace Middle and Kern Valley High School were invited to attend the Central Region Conference held at Sequoia Middle School in Porterville. Out of the 55 Wallace Middle School, CJSF members, 28 of them woke up bright and early to attend this year’s conference. The conference was an all day event with creative workshops to provide knowledge and understanding to further their educational experience.

Kern agricultural community to honor county’s top students

More than $80,000 in scholarships will be awarded to Kern County’s top agricultural students during the Kern Agricultural Foundation’s 2012 Scholarship Awards Banquet to be held on Wednesday evening, May 2 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Kern Agricultural Pavilion, 3300 East Belle Terrace Ave.

May schedule for KVHS

Kern Valley High School will have the following schedule for the month of May: On Monday, May 7 and Monday, May 17 it will be early delay schedule due to staff development with first period beginning at 9:08 a.m. On Tuesday, May 8; Friday, May 11; Friday, May 18; Friday, May 25; Tuesday, May 29; Wednesday, May 30 and Thursday, May 31 it will be minimum day/early out with buses leaving at approximately 12:57 p.m.

The Kern Valley Exchange Club is accepting scholarship applications from local graduating high school seniors who are pursuing a post-secondary education or vocational training. Seniors planning to attend a 2-year college, 4-year college or university, or a vocational school are invited to apply.

Transitional Kindergarten

The Kernville Union School District is registering children for Transitional Kindergarten for the 2012 -2103 school year from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at both school sites. Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is a program that is available to young learners the year before they enter kindergarten. TK is a bridge between the preschool years and kindergarten and gives young students an opportunity to learn and grow in a classroom that is designed to meet their academic and social needs. The TK will serve children turning five after Nov. 1, 2012, and on or before Dec. 2, 2012. TK may be recommended to children who are eligible for kindergarten who turn 5 by Nov. 1, 2012, but can benefit from the educational program provided by the TK setting.
